No job? Unemployment falls in 22 states, says IBGE, but lack of work is still worrying

The unemployment rate, as the unemployment rate is technically called, fell in 22 Brazilian states in the 2nd quarter of 2022, compared to the previous quarter. Another five states registered stability, according to IBGE. The best results are in the South of the country, while the Northeast suffers from the highest number of unemployed people.

The Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua) Quarterly, released this Friday (12) by IBGE, shows that unemployment fell in 22 of the 27 Brazilian states between April and June this year, compared to the first three months of the year.

The state of Tocantins recorded the biggest decline in unemployment from the 1st to the 2nd quarter: minus 3,8 percentage points (pp), followed by Pernambuco (3,5 pp) Alagoas, Pará, Piauí and Acre also stood out, with drops in around 3 pp in the four states.

On the national average, the unemployment rate was 9,3% in the 2nd quarter, compared to 11,1% in the 1st quarter. But the lack of work is still a concern: almost 10,1 million Brazilians are without a job, according to data previously released by the Institute.

Northeast is the region that suffers most from unemployment

The Northeast region of the country recorded the highest unemployment rate in the second quarter: 12,7%.

The region is also home to the three states with the highest unemployment rate: Bahia (15,5%), Pernambuco (13,6%) and Sergipe (12,7%).

South has the lowest unemployment rates

The lowest rates were in Santa Catarina (3,9%), Mato Grosso (4,4%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (5,2%). The Federal District, Amapá, Ceará, Mato Grosso and Rondônia registered stability.

Women are the majority among the unemployed

According to the IBGE, while the unemployment rates of white people (7,3%) and men (7,5%) were below the national average (9,3%), those of women (11,6%) and black people (11,3%) and brown people (10,8%) remained higher in the 2nd quarter of this year.

IBGE's Work and Income coordinator, Adriana Beringuy, points out that, despite the general drop in the unemployment rate in several sections of the survey, the gap between men and women is still large. “The drop was greater among women (2,2 pp compared to 1,6 pp for men), however, it was not enough to reduce the gap between them. The rate for women is 54,7% higher than that for men,” she says.
