Seven jaguars are photographed in Serra do Mar in Pará, after being considered extinct

Seven jaguars - including cubs - were identified and photographed by Brazilian researchers in the Serra do Mar region of Paraná, an Atlantic Forest area. The species, which was considered extinct in the region, was once again recorded by camera traps in September 2018. Now the biggest challenge is to guarantee the protection of the species over time and reduce threats - including the hunting of animals that are prey for jaguars.

“We don’t know the total number of this population. What we discovered is that there are occurrences of jaguars, both males and females, and also of cubs”, the researcher and technical coordinator of the Serra do Mar Large Mammals Program, member of the Network of Nature Conservation Specialists (RECN), Roberto Fusco .

Researchers from the program published the discovery of jaguars in Serra do Mar in Pará in August last year, in the scientific magazine Oryx, published by the British University of Cambridge.

After publication, adults with cubs were recorded at the site. The seventh individual in the population was sighted between April and October this year.

According to Fusco, the jaguars are in a forested area that is difficult to access, as the animals were pressured to move to mountainous areas, mainly due to hunting, deforestation and palm heart extraction.

“In Serra do Mar [Paraná], these animals found refuge in mountainous areas, more remote and difficult for humans to access, a factor that may have contributed to these felines remaining unregistered for so long,” he says.

The process of rediscovery of the jaguar in the region began in 2011, with the installation of camera traps in some specific areas of Serra do Mar in Paraná. However, no individuals were recorded.

Local residents, however, reported sightings of the animals in remote areas to researchers. “From then on, we started interviewing residents, we carried out more than 230 interviews throughout the Serra do Mar region to seek information”, says the researcher.
