EU allocates more than R$4,4 billion to protect the oceans in 2023

The European Union (EU) announced, this Thursday (2), that it will allocate more than 800 million euros (around R$4,4 billion) to marine protection programs in 2023. The announcement was made at the beginning of the Our Ocean World Conference taking place in Panama. Of this total, the EU will allocate around 320 million euros to ocean research that seeks to protect marine biodiversity and address the impacts of climate change on the ocean.

The eighth conference Our Ocean began this Thursday (2) with calls to seal an agreement as quickly as possible to protect international waters and use satellite technologies to combat illegal fishing.

It unites authorities from all over the world, including the United States.

“The EU confirms its firm commitment to international ocean governance by announcing 39 action commitments for the year 2023. These actions will be financed with 816,5 million euros,” the EU said in a statement.

“This is one of the highest amounts announced by the EU since the start of the Our Ocean conferences in 2014,” he added.

Furthermore, the European bloc “will renew its satellite constellation with the launch of Sentinel-1C, worth 250 million euros (around R$1,3 billion)”, according to the statement.

Another 12 million euros (around R$66 million) will be allocated to “facilitate access to Copernicus data and products [Earth monitoring program to protect the environment] through a Copernicus Regional Center for America Latin America and the Caribbean operated by Panama”.
