European Union reaches agreement on proposal to monitor and reduce methane emissions

The European Council said there was agreement on a proposal to monitor and reduce methane emissions in the energy sector. In a statement, the European Union (EU) body said that the text is the third of its kind and a "crucial contribution to climate action, as methane is the second most important gas for the greenhouse effect, after carbon dioxide." .

O methane is considered responsible for around 30% of the current global warming. Now, closed regulation will help to understand the origin of these emissions and respond to them, contributing to the commitment to cut emissions of this gas by 2030.

The proposal foresees new requirements for the oil, gas and coal sectors. Operators will need to carefully document their emissions and adopt appropriate mitigation measures to avoid and minimize emissions of methane in its operations, says the text.
