US$ 270 billion: that's how much natural catastrophes cost in 2022

Natural catastrophes caused losses valued at US$270 billion in 2022, a year marked by the passage of Hurricane Ian in the United States. The losses, however, were lower than in 2021, reveals the estimate released this Tuesday (10) by the reinsurer Munich Re.

In 2021, global losses had been US$320 billion, according to the German group's analysis. Despite this, losses covered by insurance in the following year remained stable, at US$ 120 billion, according to the company's balance sheet.

Last year, the natural disasters caused around 11 deaths worldwide, compared to the 9.320 deaths recorded in 2021.

North America remains at the top of the list of natural disasters. O hurricane ian, which hit the west coast of Florida in late September and swept the continent with winds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, leads the world catastrophe rankings by a wide margin.

Losses reach US$100 billion. Of this total, around US$60 billion was under insurance.

O hurricane ian it was the second costliest in history, behind only Katrina, which devastated the state of Louisiana in 2005.

The largest number of lives lost in 2022 was caused by flooding following heavy monsoon rains in the Paquistão, which killed 1.700 people. Estimated at US$15 billion, the direct damage was practically not covered by insurance.

In Europe, the drought caused unquantified indirect damage. In France and Spain, specifically, strong hailstorms caused multimillion-dollar losses.
