Diesel leak in Philippine waters after oil tanker sinks

🚢 A Philippine oil tanker partially sank in the waters of the archipelago this Tuesday (28), authorities said, as they tried to contain a diesel leak measuring several kilometers. The "Princess Empress" was transporting about 800 liters of industrial diesel from the province of Bataan, near the capital Manila, to the central region of Iloilo when its engine overheated, the Philippine Coast Guard said.

According to a first investigation, the “accident” ship drifted in the waters near the tip of Balingoán, on the island of Mindoro, “due to difficult sea conditions, until it was half submerged”.

The Coast Guard indicated it was monitoring a leak of diesel, which was powering the tanker, but did not find any industrial fuel oil from the ship's cargo at sea. Another vessel rescued the 20 crew members on board, all of whom were in “good physical condition,” according to the Coast Guard.

In another statement, the same source reported that the leak located near the ship was five kilometers long and 500 meters wide.

The Coast Guard announced it would install a device to pump out spilled fuel.
