Summer Breaking: festival in Rio opens world dance calendar

The international Breaking do Verão competition begins in Rio de Janeiro, starting this Thursday (19). The event - which is in its second edition - opens this year's dance calendar around the world. If you don't know, take a peek. If you already enjoy it, come and find out how the event unfolds.

According to the event's creator, Fernando Bó, the Summer Break in Rio “serves as preparation for the rest of the calendar”. And the best: entry is free and classification is free.

The international competition will feature great b-boys and b-girls from all over the world, as well as a free show with Rio artist Kiaz, who has recorded with names like Anitta and L7nnon.

Do you know what breaking is?

It is a style of street dance that became popular in the 70s in the Bronx, New York, in the United States, and constitutes one of the elements that make up Hip Hop Culture. “It’s culture and a philosophy of life”, defines Fernando Bó.

The creator of Summer Break explained that just like skateboarding and surfing, the breaking has its own lifestyle, with its own music, art and dance.

It is also considered a sport. And, therefore, the competition even has broadcast and narration:

Breaking at the Olympics

Breaking became an Olympic sport, as did surfing and skateboarding, which had their first competitions at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Sports dance debuts as an Olympic modality in 2024, in Paris and brings good promeof medals for Brazil.

What will the disputes be like?

The event has 32 invited athletes, 16 male and 16 female, in addition to those registered for the disputes scheduled for today (19) and tomorrow, preliminaries to the qualifiers.

The top three in each gender will participate in the elimination competitions on Saturday (21) and Sunday (22).

“We believe that this competition will make people learn more about the culture and what is behind this dance sport. O breaking It is a very strong tool for transformation and we want to bring this perspective to people”, highlighted Fernando Bó.

Breaking do Verão is technically curated by Pelezinho, a b-boy who grew up in São José do Rio Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, and became responsible for putting Brazil on the world breaking map.

Of those registered, 12 are international athletes, coming from countries such as Kazakhstan, the United States, Venezuela, France, Morocco, the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Argentina and Japan, in addition to Brazil.

The invited athletes presented better performances in important competitions held last year, according to mapping carried out by Pelezinho.

Where?

The festival runs until Sunday (22), at the Olympic Park Velodrome, in Barra da Tijuca, west of the capital.

The event is supported by the Rio de Janeiro government, the State Culture Incentive Law and Petrobras.
