Bumble announces AI to check fake profiles and scams

Bumble revealed, last Monday (5), the launch of an innovative feature driven by artificial intelligence (AI), aimed at detecting spam, scams and fake profiles. Called "Deception Detector", this new tool aims to combat malicious content before it affects users.

During the tests, the Bumble found that the tool automatically blocked 95% of accounts identified as spam or scams. In the first two months of testing, Bumble saw a 45% reduction in user reports of spam, scams, and fake accounts.

O Deception Detector operates in conjunction with Bumble's human moderation team. The launch of this new feature comes in response to Bumble's internal research, which highlighted that fake profiles and the risk of scams are users' main concerns when using online dating apps.

The survey also revealed that 46% of women expressed anxiety about the authenticity of their online matches on dating apps.

Last year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that romance scams cost victims $1,3 billion in 2022, with an average reported loss of $4.400. The report indicated that while romance scammers often use dating apps to target people, it is more common for victims to be approached through direct messages on social media platforms.

For example, 40% of people who lost money to a romance scam said the contact started on social media, while 19% said it started on a website or app.

“Bumble Inc. was founded with the goal of building equitable relationships and empowering women to make the first move, and Deception Detector is our latest innovation as part of our ongoing commitment to our community to ensure the connections made in our applications are genuine. With a dedicated focus on women's experience online, we recognize that in the age of AI, trust is more important than ever.” commented Lidiane Jones, CEO of Bumble.

The new tool represents the latest artificial intelligence of Bumble, aiming to strengthen the application's security. In 2019, Bumble introduced the “Private Detector” feature, which automatically blurs nude images and labels them as such in chats, allowing users to view the image or report the user.

Bumble is also employing AI in Bumble For Friends, the company's app for finding friends. Recently, the application launched AI-powered icebreaker suggestions, helping users compose and send a first message based on the other person's profile. Users have the option to adjust the question or request another suggestion, but they can only use an AI-generated icebreaker per chat.
