Whaling could resume in Iceland under conditions

The Icelandic government authorized the resumption of whaling on Friday (1st), under strict conditions, after having suspended it for more than two months in the name of animal welfare.

“Whaling could resume tomorrow,” announced the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in a message to AFP this Thursday (31).

The decision was very poorly received by animal rights groups who were hoping for an end to this controversial practice, after the suspension of hunting decided at the end of June.

“This decision is devastating and inexplicable,” Humane Society International said in a statement.

At the end of June, the government had decided to suspend hunting, following the publication of a report requested by the government and which concluded that the practice did not comply with Icelandic law on animal welfare.

The only holder of a fishing license in Iceland “must respect the regulations imposed today by the government”, authorities said.

This regulation “provides for stronger requirements in terms of hunting equipment and methods and reinforced surveillance”, he added.

The fishing license of the last active hunting company in the country, Hvalur, expires in 2023. It has already announced that this season will be the last, due to the low profitability of fishing.
