Poisoned dogs: snack factory reopens while owners fight for compensation

Do you remember the series of deaths of dogs poisoned by a contaminated treat? About three months after the first deaths, guardians are still struggling to obtain some financial compensation. After being closed for recall, the Bassar Pet Food factory - responsible for producing the snacks - returned to operating in Guarulhos, in Greater São Paulo.

the factory of Bassar Pet Foods was closed on September 2, after part of its production line was found to be contaminated by ethylene glycol, qwhich caused the death of a number of animalss. At the time, all of the company's products – included snacks from the brands Every Dayda Petz (Oral care snack) e Bassar Dental Care – were removed from the shelves and Bassar made a recall of products purchased from February this year.

After a long investigation – and more than 80 dead animals, in at least 10 states – authorities found that the contamination of the snacks originated from an ingredient, produced by Tecno Clean Industrial LTDA.

Remember the story:

To reopen, Bassar hired consultants and experts to validate the production line. In a statement, the company states that “all processes are being reviewed to meet the highest quality and safety standards in food production”.

Tutors want justice and demand greater quality control

United by WhatsApp groups, owners from all over Brazil began to demand stricter control rules from public authorities to ensure the quality of pet food.

Owners are trying to get reimbursement for the costs of hospitalizations, exams and medicines in court, as well as some compensation for the emotional damage of those who lost their animals.

And so that the death of their pets was not in vain, the group of guardians created a online petition to collect signatures and ensure that all companies involved in the production and distribution of contaminated snacks are held accountable and punished

A fight in court for compensation

“In São Paulo, there are 19 lawsuits filed. And there are also 10 more actions across the country”, says Nayele Freitas Guidetti, from Zeca, an 8-year-old French bulldog, who died after consuming a contaminated treat.

The report by Curto News had access to two lawsuits filed against Bassar, in which the company claims that it was harmed by the two months of closure and, therefore, would not be financially able to afford compensation claims:

“We know that companies (manufacturer and distributor brands) have civil liability insurance, that is, they can only pay the deductible so that guardians are compensated”, says Nayele.

For guardians, all that remains is to wait for the court's decision and work to ensure that new cases of pet food contamination never occur again in Brazil.
