Carrefour denies supplying meat to livestock farmer accused of deforestation

The French retail chain Carrefour denied, this Tuesday (29), that it had indirectly obtained beef through a cattle rancher accused of carrying out deforestation in the Amazon, following statements to this effect by the investigative vehicle Repórter Brasil.

The company, which leads the food distribution market in Brazil, assured, via email, that it had “no supply of beef from the incriminated rancher (Bruno Heller), nor from members of his family”.

Repórter Brasil accused Frialto, one of Carrefour's suppliers in the country, of buying cattle from Bruno Heller's farms, associated with cases of illegal deforestation in the country. Amazon.

According to the vehicle, Heller had “washed cattle” by transferring animals from farms accused of deforestation to others that did not have such accusations, some in the name of his daughter.

“Following the alert made by Repórter Brasil, Carrefour Brasil confirmed in its database that there was no supply of beef from the incriminated cattle rancher, nor from members of his family”, insisted the French company.

Carrefour's Brazilian branch has a “real-time satellite surveillance device for more than 33.000 farms in Brazil,” the group added.

Carrefour had previously been accused of maintaining ties with meat suppliers accused of carrying out deforestation in the Amazon.

In September 2022, the environmental NGO Mighty Earth published a study on 102 meat products distributed by Carrefour in Brazil, which, according to them, demonstrated that two thirds of these items came from JBS slaughterhouses, regularly accused of promoting deforestation.

Carrefour reacted immediately, announcing the suspension of its collaboration with two JBS slaughterhouses that supplied its branches in the country.

Months later, the same NGO accused Carrefour of still having “links” with the “worst Brazilian slaughterhouses”.

Carrefour acknowledged at the time “an error in the instructions” to suspend its collaborations.
