A new survey conducted by the Artificial Intelligence Policy Institute (AIPI) and published by the website Axios shows that the majority of North American voters are concerned about the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) and support federal regulation to control these risks.

The survey, which was conducted by YouGov, interviewed 1.001 North American voters from July 18 to 21, 2023. There is a consensus in the community about the high risk of AI interference in the country's democratic process.

The results showed that 62% of voters are somewhat or almost “concerned” about AI, compared to just 21% who are somewhat or almost “excited” about it.

Furthermore, 72% of voters prefer to slow down AI development, compared to just 8% who prefer to speed it up. When asked about the risks of AI, voters cited a range of concerns, including the possibility that AI could be used to create autonomous weapons, surveillance systems and systems that discriminate against certain people. Additionally, voters expressed concern that AI could be used to manipulate people or create a society in which machines are more intelligent than humans.

The survey also showed that voters do not trust technology executives to regulate AI responsibly. When asked whether they trust technology executives to regulate AI, just 18% of voters said they trust it a lot or a little, while 82% said they don't trust it a lot or not at all.

“Americans are concerned about the next stages of AI and want policymakers to step in to develop it responsibly,” said Daniel Colson, executive director of AIPI.

“This poll shows that there is strong public support for federal regulation of AI, and we hope that lawmakers tomem measures to address these risks”, adds Colson.
