Charles III's coronation events end with 'Volunteer Day' in the UK

The British were invited this Monday (8), a public holiday in England, to participate in volunteer activities, in a holiday that ends the long weekend of celebrations for the coronation of King Charles III. After the solemn coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Saturday (6) and a more festive day with thousands of collective lunches in the neighborhoods on Sunday, this Monday will be dedicated to charity.

The coalition of associations and religious groups organizing the initiative hopes to bring together hundreds of thousands of volunteers, in a joint effort in which more than 1.500 charitable organizations participate.

King Charles and Queen Camilla do not participate in the “Big Help Out” festival, but other members of the royal family are present.

Heir Prince William will attend a puppy training class at the Guide Dog Training Center for the Blind.

Coronation of the King

On Sunday (7), the king was the guest of honor at a show that brought together 20 spectators in front of a stage installed in Windsor, a small town about 40 kilometers from London, where the royal castle is located.

Musicians such as American singer Lionel Richie, American artist Katy Perry and 1990s British pop band Take That participated in the show.

Big screens were installed across the country to follow the event, which featured an orchestra of 70 musicians and in which several actors such as Pierce Brosnan, Hugh Jackman and Joan Collins recalled biographical information about the king.

“Very proud mother”

In addition to the presentations, Prince William took to the stage and paid tribute to his father. He spoke about his long-standing passion for ecology, his help to thousands of underprivileged young people, and his advocacy for all religions.

He also made a reference to his grandmother, the late Elizabeth II, saying: “I know she is watching us from above.”

“I would be a very proud mother,” said the prince.

Charles III's coronation on Saturday as monarch of the United Kingdom and the 14 Commonwealth countries was the first in seven decades.

Critics

The government, however, is being heavily criticized for the arrest of defenders of the republic in the United Kingdom, who were detained before they even started a planned protest on Saturday.

Graham Smith, director of the anti-monarchist movement “Republic”, told the BBC on Sunday that “it was all a deliberate attempt to disrupt and curtail” the protest.

This Monday was declared a holiday to end the celebrations and so that people can enjoy Sunday's events, without worrying about the responsibilities of the following day.
