O layoffs.fyi was created at the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic by Roger Lee, a digital entrepreneur. At first, the platform focused on monitoring professionals laid off due to the pandemic and its impact on the global economy. However, after three years, the layoffs.fyi continues to be a portal whose objective goes beyond tracking these professionals, but also creating a talent pool for new job opportunities.

How does layoffs.fyi?

The website uses the Airtable as a base, which works like a spreadsheet or database. There, it is possible to filter layoffs by company, number of employees laid off and percentage affected, date of announcement, industry sector and country.

Since the beginning of monitoring, the layoffs.fyi accounted for the biggest cut in vacancies in big techs, name given to the group with the five largest technology companies: Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Apple, Meta (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) and Microsoft. Of these, only the Apple does not appear among the ten companies that carried out the most mass layoffs in recent years.

With the aim of boosting these affected professionals and helping them secure a replacement in the market, the layoffs.fyi it also compiles files with people's names, area of ​​activity and contact information.

According to spreadsheet data, since the creation of monitoring at the beginning of 2020, the period with the highest number of layoffs was the first quarter of 2023. More than 186 technology employees were laid off in the first three months of this year.
