Pandemic affected attendance at cultural activities, survey shows

One of the areas most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic is still struggling to recover: culture. Due to social isolation measures to contain the spread of the virus, many leisure spaces were closed. According to research by Itaú Cultural, 62% of the population goes to cultural activities less frequently than before the pandemic.

According to the study, only 26% of people have returned to the same “cultural” rhythm as before the emergence of the coronavirus, while 12% are attending cultural activities more frequently.

Among the activities most frequented by people in the last year is cinema, with 26%. However, in the same period, the study showed that there was a sharp 18% drop in the number of people going to arthritic, music, theater or dance performances. Before the pandemic, the percentage was 38%.

This impact is being felt by people in the area. Recently, actress Mariana Xavier used social media to vent after not even having half of the free tickets collected for her play, in Teresina, Piauí.

The Itaú Cultural survey was carried out in partnership with the Datafolha Institute with 2.240 interviewees, between 16 and 65 years of age in all regions of Brazil.
