UK announces actions to promote the use and development of AI

The United Kingdom announced this Monday (18) a series of actions to promote the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for development in underdeveloped countries. The announcement took place during the United Nations General Assembly.

Actions include:

  • A £1 million grant to the Complex Risk Analysis Fund (CRAF), which will use AI to proactively predict conflicts and humanitarian crises.
  • The launch of the 'AI for Development' program, in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The program will provide training and resources to help developing countries develop local AI skills.
  • Co-hosting an AI-focused event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The event will bring together governments, technology companies and NGOs to discuss how AI can accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

“AI has the potential to be a powerful tool for global development,” said the UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly. “By using AI responsibly and ethically, we arepromeefforts to help create a more prosperous and sustainable world for all.”

The UK is also preparing to host the first major global AI safety summit on 1-2 November. The summit aims to establish global agreement on urgent international measures needed to promote security at the forefront of AI technology.
