Commission Vice President Vera Jourova emphasized the need to clearly label content and images produced by AI algorithms, especially when it comes to fake news.

She said companies using generative AI technologies must take responsibility for combating disinformation coming from sources like Russia.

Jourova highlighted the importance of companies like Bingchat, from Microsoft, and Bard, from Google, implement methods to prevent criminals from using their services to generate and disseminate disinformation.

Signatories to the European Union Code of Practice for combating disinformation, such as Google, Microsoft and Meta, were asked to report on the security measures they implemented until July.

Strict AI legislation

This initiative by the European Commission comes amid stricter legislation being adopted in the EU to regulate artificial intelligence. Recently, European lawmakers passed a comprehensive law that imposes security requirements, data governance and prohibits intrusive and discriminatory uses of AI systems.

Importantly, failure to comply with EU guidelines can result in serious consequences for businesses.
