Google announces layoff of 12 thousand employees

The parent company of Google, Alphabet, announced this Friday (20) a global plan to cut 12.000 jobs, following the trend of other technology giants to implement large-scale restructuring.

“We have decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12.000 jobs”, said the CEO of Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, in an email sent to employees.

In the message, Pichai states that the layoffs are a response to “a distinct economic reality that we face today”.

The measure was announced one day after the Microsoft disclose its plan to lay off 10.000 workers in the coming months. Other big tech companies like Meta, owner of Facebook, Amazon e Twitter, had already announced plans to cut employees, also under the justification that the sector is facing economic turbulence.

“We have conducted a rigorous review across all areas of products and activities to ensure our people and roles are aligned with our most important priorities as a company”, wrote Pichai.

“The posts we are removing reflect the outcome of this review. The fact that these changes have an impact on the lives ofGooglelol weighs heavily on me and I take full responsibility for the decisions that brought us here”, added the CEO.
