Google fears losing hegemony in the development of artificial intelligence, points out leaked document

Open source community threatens big companies' leadership in language models.

  • According to craft, the open source community (independent developers) is quickly surpassing the efforts of these companies. The information was released last Thursday (4).
  • Large companies maintain a small advantage in terms of quality, but the differences are closing quickly.

“While our models still have a slight edge in terms of quality, the gap is closing surprisingly quickly. Open source models are faster, more customizable, more private, and more capable. And they are doing it in weeks, not months,” says the doc.

  • The open source community is solving the scalability problem and producing new ideas in a matter of weeks.
  • Now the focus should be on testing smaller models faster, rather than training large models from scratch on expensive hardware.
  • The ability to keep technology secret is a tenuous proposition, and open source collaboration makes it difficult for companies to maintain their competitive advantage.
  • For Google, OpenAI is also making the same mistakes and its ability to maintain the advantage is in question.
  • Finally, the document also points out that the Google is offering as an alternative to joining other people's projects to support its products: “We must think carefully about whether each new application or idea really needs a completely new model”.
  • Who leaked the document? It is not yet known, but, according to the  Bloomberg , Luke Sernau, Senior Software Engineer at Google, sent the text to teammates a month ago.
