Law that could ban TikTok from the US is approved by the House

The United States House of Representatives approved, this Wednesday (13), a law that could ban TikTok in the country. The potential for banning comes from an imposition of the project: either the social network - currently controlled by the Chinese ByteDance - changes ownership in the USA or it will have to leave the country.

The bill passed 352 votes to 65, with bipartisan support, but faces a more uncertain path in the Senate, where some argue for a different approach to regulating foreign-owned apps that pose security concerns. The Senate majority leader, Chuck SChumer, said that the body will review the legislation.

the fate of TikTok, used by about 170 million Americans, has become a hot issue in Washington. Lawmakers said their offices have received high volumes of calls from teenage TikTok users opposing the legislation, with the volume of complaints sometimes greater than the number of calls seeking a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

“This process was secret and the bill was blocked for a reason: it's a ban,” a TikTok spokesperson said after the vote, adding that they hoped the Senate would “consider the facts, listen to their constituents” when considering the project.

The move is the latest in a series in Washington to respond to US national security concerns over China, from connected vehicles to advanced artificial intelligence and cranes in US ports.
