Lawmakers said their offices have received high volumes of calls from teenage TikTok users opposing the legislation, with the volume of complaints sometimes greater than the number of calls seeking a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
“This process was secret and the bill was blocked for a reason: it's a ban,” a TikTok spokesperson said after the vote, adding that they hoped the Senate would “consider the facts, listen to their constituents” when considering the project.
The move is the latest in a series in Washington to respond to US national security concerns over China, from connected vehicles to advanced artificial intelligence and cranes in US ports.
