Paragraphica: artist creates camera that “takes photos” without a lens using artificial intelligence

Danish artist Bjørn Karmann developed an intriguing project to say the least: a camera that doesn't need a lens to take photographs. That's right, using artificial intelligence, the machine records any location, says the creator.

According to a Karmann, who revealed his creation on Twitter on May 30, the machine collects data from the location, such as address, time of day, weather conditions and special events, and combines this information to generate a unique image.

The device has a GPS and a web connection to collect data. The application works together with APIs from consolidated artificial intelligence programs, the main one being Stable Diffusion.

Combining all this data, the camera generates a description of the location in which it is located. If the user thinks the description is correct, he presses the button and Paragraphica generates a photo of the location. There is also an online version of the device, which can be accessed by clicking here. However, due to high demand, the website has not been working properly.

See the diagram below how Paragraphica works:

The results, of course, are not always accurate to reality. But the author says that this is the objective. Paragraphica does not seek to take accurate or faithful photos of the real world, but plays with the idea of how Stable Diffusion interprets that same place. And at the same time, it satirizes the current technology situation, in which professions are being replaced by artificial intelligence.

The Amsterdam-based Dane warns of the danger of the current AI situation, so the artist's idea is not to sell the camera, but to make people think about the use of these tools in art.

Oh, and the futuristic design of the machine only serves to draw attention, those spider legs on the front, for example, only have a figurative role.
