Humanoid robots for social good: what is it?

Eight humanoid robots capable of performing tasks for social good is the promessa from the United Nations (UN) for the global summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI) scheduled for July in Geneva. The International Telecommunications Union wants to show how new technologies and AIs can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the fight against the climate crisis and support humanitarian action.

It could be a science fiction script, but it is pure reality! Humanoid robots (which imitate human reactions and even shapes) are already a reality.

The robots that the UN will present are still being kept under lock and key. Therefore, the images in this report are just (illustrative) examples of what humanoid robots can look like.

“It is in our collective interest to shape artificial intelligence faster than it shapes us,” said the new ITU Secretary General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, in a statement this Wednesday (1).

“This summit, the UN's flagship platform for AI, will bring together leading voices representing a diversity of interests to ensure that artificial intelligence can be a powerful catalyst for progress in our race to save the SDGs,” he added.

The UN meeting will bring together more than 20 robotics experts and eight humanoid robots – called Beonmi, Nadine, Sophia, Geminoid, 4NE-1, Ai-Da Robot, Grace and Desdemona.

They – the robots – will display skills in fighting fires, distributing aid, providing healthcare and managing sustainable agriculture.
