Sam Altman breaks silence on letter asking for break ChatGPT

During a speech at MIT, Sam AltmanCEO of OpenAI, spoke about the open letter that calls for a pause in the advancement of AI technology. Altman confirmed that the company is not training GPT-5, considered the successor to the GPT-4 language model.

The statement was made last Thursday (13).

Last month, thousands of cutting-edge technology experts, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause in training AI systems more advanced than GPT-4.

The letter highlights growing concerns about the race to develop increasingly powerful AI and the risks this poses to society. While contemporary AI systems like GPT-4 can already compete with humans in general tasks, the letter warns of possible information bias, job automation and the risk of losing control over human civilization.

Altman agreed with some aspects of the open letter, specifically regarding the need to increase security capabilities in AI development. He stated that the OpenAI took extensive security measures when training GPT-4, including external audits and security checks.

“We're doing other things besides GPT-4 that I think have all kinds of security issues that are important to address and were completely left out of the letter,” Altman said.

However, he disagreed with the proposed monetary pause on AI development and noted the lack of technical specificity in the letter. Altman also refuted the claim that the OpenAI was training GPT-5, emphasizing the importance of accurate AI security assessment and monitoring.
