TikTok launches screen time control

The Chinese platform TikTok, which is criticized for being "addictive", will implement a warning system after 60 minutes of screen use. Users who declare themselves under 18 will have to enter a password to continue browsing after one hour on the application.

According to a statement from TikTok, responsible by minors may “set a maximum daily viewing time for the teenager” based on days of the week, but only if there is a family connection in the accounts.

It is worth remembering that, as on other websites, young people can lie about their age or deactivate the function.

The new option offered, however, adds to existing warnings and seeks to reassure those who criticize the time that young people between the ages of 4 and 18 spend on the video page – delivered by algorithms that analyze the user's tastes.

More than an hour a day

According to a global study carried out in 2022 by Qustodio, minors spend on average 1h47 daily on TikTok.

The platform is also criticized by several countries, which suspect users of transferring data to China. This caused governments and institutions to ban the application on their mobile devices.

The Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin is limited to 40 minutes per day for children under 14, who have access blocked between 22pm and 6am.
