EU and Google seek voluntary standards on AI

European Union (EU) and Google seek to define voluntary standards on Artificial Intelligence (AI) before specific legislation comes into force – said the European Commissioner for Industry, Thierry Breton, this Wednesday (24).

“We agree that we cannot afford to wait for the AI law to come into force and to work together with all developers to introduce a voluntary pact,” Breton told AFP after speaking with the CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai.

The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, proposed legislation on AI in 2021. Since then, the topic has become an urgent matter.

The European Parliament is expected to approve the bill next month, thus opening a phase of difficult negotiations with the bloc's 27 member states to define a final version.

Breton said that even if the EU adopts this legislation by the end of the year, it would begin to be applied “at the end of 2025 at the earliest”.

The European Parliament's text includes a ban on AI systems for biometric surveillance, emotion recognition and predictive surveillance. It also seeks to put generative AI systems – such as ChatGPT e Midjourney – in a category that requires special transparency measures.

Yesterday (23), the vice-president of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager, said that US and EU authorities will discuss the matter at the bilateral meeting of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC), scheduled for next week, in Sweden.
