3 years of pandemic: attention to 'long Covid'

On March 11, 2020, biologist Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), gave a speech that would go down in history: we were, in fact, in a pandemic. Three years, 676,5 million cases and 6,8 million deaths later, the world finds itself in a completely different moment from the health crisis. But be aware: 'long Covid' deserves a lot of care and attention. 👀

Prolonged neurological, respiratory and gastrointestinal problems are some of the symptoms that may indicate the existence of 'post-covid syndrome', also known as 'long covid'.

🔊 The Curto News talked to Vanderson Sampaio, researcher at the Todos pela Saúde Institute (ITpS), to better understand what 'long covid' and how to identify it. ⤵️

The researcher reported that a study – developed by ITpS together with Albert Einstein Hospital (🇬🇧) – found that 30% of the health professionals analyzed developed some sign/symptom of 'long covid' and that, therefore, if the general population were observed, we could have almost 1/3 of it with some presentation of 'post-covid syndrome'. ⤵️

Another finding of this research was that people who took the 4th dose of the covid-19 vaccine had less 'long covid' and that being female is a risk factor, although there is no clear explanation for this. ⤵️

vanderson states that it is difficult to specify how long the symptoms of 'long covid' persist and that the need for attention and care for patients who present them must overload the Unified Health System (SUS). ⤵️

The researcher also informs that there is no plan on the part of the Ministry of Health to deal with this patient demand, but that studies such as the one formulated by the ITpS and the Einstein can assist authorities in decision-making. ⤵️

⚠️ Message given, right? Pay attention to the booster vaccination against Covid-19 and, when you notice any symptoms, seek medical attention!
