Daily soda consumption increases heart risk in teenagers, research shows

Daily consumption of soft drinks by teenagers - even dieters - can be considered a cardiovascular risk factor and is associated with overweight, obesity and hypertension. This is what a study by the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) reveals. The authors evaluated 37 thousand Brazilian adolescents between 12 and 17 years old.

The researchers also investigated the individuals' glycemic and lipid profiles through laboratory diagnoses and, in addition to physical examinations to assess blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), among other indicators.

The research showed that the consumption of industrialized sugary drinks common in adolescents' routines, and daily servings of soft drinks from 450 ml may be associated with excess weight and hypertension.

Liquid calories do not guarantee the same level of satiety as solid calories and, therefore, the consumption of sugary drinks leads to an increase in calories in the diet. Additionally, items diet or light carry good doses of sodium, which can influence the increased blood pressure.

“The data surprised us because these young people end up developing cardiovascular risk factors very early, which can have significant impacts due to the longer period of exposure to these factors”, says nurse Ana Flavia Britto, one of the authors of the study.

According to the expert, Limiting consumption of these items may reduce weight gain and related illnesses – such as cardiovascular diseases, the main cause of death in Brazil.

“There are already public policies being implemented worldwide in this regard”, says Britto. “But changing eating habits considered inappropriate involves multiple factors that need to be better understood in the context of adolescence in national surveys”, he concludes.

And in the South region of the country, consumption is, on average, double that recorded in the North and Northeast, according to data from the 2017/2018 family budget survey.
