Impacts of the metaverse on the environment

The metaverse may still sound like something distant, but the reality is that it is already present in our society. And, like anything else, it impacts our planet. So what exactly is the environmental impact of the metaverse?

The metaverse and sustainability

The future of metaverse It is still unpredictable but, although it is in the process of development, it is here. And it's definitely changing the way we live.

The impacts of the metaverse on environment not yet calculable, but positive and negative effects can already be predicted.

positive impacts

The main advantage for the environment is that the metaverse will considerably eliminate the need for human displacement, resulting in less traffic, fewer accidents, fewer pollution and, consequently, less global warming.

It will be much easier to hold meetings in the virtual world, saving time, in addition to the huge costs of security and travel – which would directly impact greenhouse gas emissions resulting from travel in cars and planes.

Still, according to a study published by the news website Clean Technica (*), from the United States, the metaverse will help reduce other polluting activities. For example, military training actions – such as pilotthose flying in warplanes – could be carried out in the metaverse, reducing emissions.

negative impacts

On the other hand, according to the DataQuest (*), analysts are worried that the metaverse could lead to a flood of greenhouse gas emissions. Virtual reality technology and data centers use artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services, which require large amounts of energy.

Um recent study (*) estimates that training just one AI model could generate 626.000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2), which is more than 5 times the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by a car in its entire lifetime. Cloud gaming, necessary for virtual reality, increases the need for high-resolution images, which requires greater energy use.

Another concern is that the metaverse will encourage people to buy new technologies, which could mean a lot of electronic waste – which is polluting our soil, groundwater and landfills.

It is vital that large corporations find environmentally friendly ways to build their virtual realities.
