New Zealand wants to end smoking by 2025

New Zealand is the first country to raise the minimum age for smoking cigarettes. The goal is to gradually eliminate smoking within three years.

This Tuesday (13), New Zealand approved a law in which people born on or after January 1, 2009 cannot buy cigarettes.

According to data from the country's Ministry of Health, only 8% of adults smoke daily, a record drop in smoking. On the other hand, electronic cigarette users grew 2,1% from 2021 to 2022.

“Thousands of people will live longer, healthier lives and the health care system will be $5 billion better off by not having to treat the diseases caused by smoking, such as many types of cancer, heart attacks, strokes and amputations,” said Ayesha Verrall, New Zealand Minister of Health.
