What is the Paris Agreement? And why is it so important?

The Paris Agreement is an international treaty that has one main objective: to reduce global warming. In practice, it seeks to prevent a 2ºC increase in global temperature in relation to the pre-industrial era, encouraging the creation of mechanisms to reduce the impact of climate change and the replacement of sources that emit greenhouse gases. O Curto explains more about one of the most important climate commitments in existence, quick game. 🤓

Paris Agreement and NDCs

Paris Agreement is an international commitment to combat global warming, approved during the 21st United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP21), in Paris, on December 12, 2015, having entered into force on November 4, 2016.

On that occasion, 195 countries – including Brazil – discussed the terms for the document that replaced the Kyoto Protocol, the first international treaty to control the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, signed in 1997, in Japan.

The main objective of Paris Agreement is to brake global warming and increase global efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1,5ºC and prevent it from exceeding 2ºC by the end of the century, based on the pre-industrial period.

But there are other goals and guidelines that are also raised in the Wake up, As:

ADVERTISING

  • promote cooperation between civil society, the private sector, financial institutions, cities, communities and indigenous peoples to expand and strengthen actions to mitigate global warming;
  • recommendations regarding the adaptation of signatory countries to climate change, especially for less developed countries, in order to reduce vulnerability to extreme weather events;
  • stimulates the financial and technological support from developed countries to expand actions to meet the goals of least developed countries;
  • promoting technological development and technology transfer and training for adaptation to climate change.

O Paris Agreement is voluntary and each country defines its own Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) with the domestic goals it will follow to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the strategies to achieve this.

Brazilian NDC

In December 2020, the Brazilian government sent its NDC revised to Paris Agreement, representing the country's new commitment to combating climate change, following the first version presented after the approval of the international treaty, in 2015.

Brazilian NDC reaffirmed the commitment to reduce total net greenhouse gas emissions by 37% in 2025 in relation to 2005, and assumed the commitment to reduce Brazilian emissions by 43% by 2030.

Other commitments:

  • Reduce deforestation;
  • Use clean energy in industries;
  • Improve transport infrastructure;
  • Intensify the use of alternative energy sources;
  • Reforest up to 12 million hectares;
  • Increase the share of bioenergy in the Brazilian energy matrix to 18% by 2030.

It is important to highlight that, every five years, the goals of all countries must undergo a general review, so that they can be reviewed and improved.
