Researchers find rocks made of plastic in Brazil

Rocks made of plastic? Yes! 😰 Researchers and scientists from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) found rocks identical to natural ones, but composed of plastic while doing geological mapping on Ilha da Trindade – a volcanic island located 1.140 kilometers from Vitória, capital of Espírito Santo. The archipelago is administered by the Brazilian Navy and is an important marine reserve.

The observation was made in 2019, and scientists stated that rocks that include plastic in their formation must not be more than two decades old.

The finding was published by the researchers in the journal Marine Pollution Bulletin, which is a reference in marine pollution. They highlight how humans are influencing the Earth's geological cycle, altering the process of rock formation through marine pollution.

Belonging to the call blue amazon – an area with abundant natural resources and minerals that only Brazil can exploit economically – Trindade Island is a natural habitat for seabirds and has a fragile and unique ecosystem that includes endemic species of fish and different sets of reefs.

According to the work carried out by scientists, pollution, found especially in the marine environment, is caused, in large part, by plastic materials, and can even alter the fauna and flora scenarios of the terrestrial environment.
