The Social Progress Index (IPS) 2023, released this Thursday (27), by the Institute of Man and the Environment of the Amazon (Imazon) shows that deforestation is related to the low development of the Amazon. Researchers at the non-profit environmental organization Imazon wanted, instead of trying to repair the damage caused by deforestation, to find a way to prevent it from happening. Even in a reduced form, the Amazon continues to be destroyed at the beginning of 2023. In January alone, 198 km² were devastated: an area similar to the loss of almost 640 football fields of forest per day. To try to combat deforesters and miners, who act illegally in protected areas, the Colombian government is testing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze criminal and money flow networks. The announcement was made during the 'Towards the Amazon Summit' event, last weekend in Colombia.
The size of the deforested area in the Amazon during the first four months of this year was 36% smaller than in the same period in 2022, according to monitoring by the Institute for Man and the Environment of the Amazon (Imazon). Between January and April this year, the partial or total removal of Amazonian vegetation cover reached an area of 1.203 km². In the first four months of last year, 1.884 km² were deforested. 🌳

🚘 The European Parliament approved the draft regulation that prohibits the sale of new vehicles with gasoline and diesel engines from 2035. The European Commission presented the proposal for this regulation in July 2021, in a project that generated intense negotiations between the Parliament and the European Council, which represents the bloc's countries. With the aim of mapping and focusing on deforestation processes in the Amazon, the Democracy and Sustainability Institute (IDS), together with other partners, developed the JusAmazônia Portal.
