Deforestation delays social development in the Amazon, says Imazon

The Social Progress Index (IPS) 2023, released this Thursday (27), by the Institute of Man and the Environment of the Amazon (Imazon) shows that deforestation is related to the low development of the Amazon. According to the institute, the cities that destroyed the most forests in the last 3 years had the worst social performance rates.

O IPS Amazônia 2023 considers 47 quality of life indicators in areas such as health, education, security and housing.

The 29 territories with the highest IPS scores showed an average deforestation of 20 km² from 2020 to 2022, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). On the other hand, the 89 municipalities with the lowest evaluations fell an average of 86 km² during this period.

The institute cited that, in 2020, the Amazon it was responsible for 52% of Brazil's greenhouse gas emissions, but contributed 9% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

O Average Amazon IPS is 54,32 – below the Brazilian average of 67,94. If the region were a country, the social development of the Amazon would be equivalent to that of Malawi. According to IPS Global, from 2022, the African country occupies position 125 among the 169 nations evaluated.

According to Imazon, the Amazon IPS has 3 dimensions of indicators: Basic Human Needs; Foundations for Wellbeing; Opportunities.

The last one was the one with the worst performance. It is the category that brings together indicators such as family vulnerability, gender-based violence, child labor, access to higher education, public transport and access to culture and leisure.

This is the 4th edition of IPS Amazônia. The index had already been measured in 2014, 2018 and 2021.

Among the three dimensions analyzed, the Amazon improved in Basic Human Needs and Foundations for Well-being, but worsened in Opportunities. Among the 12 components that bring together the 47 indicators, the region worsened in half of them: Nutrition and Basic Medical Care, Personal Safety, Access to Information and Communication, Quality of the Environment, Individual Freedoms and Choice and Social Inclusion.
