After silence, Aras posts video in which he defends the electoral system but avoids criticizing Bolsonaro

The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, released a video on his YouTube channel this Thursday (21) in which he defends the electoral system. The publication was made three days after President Jair Bolsonaro's attacks on electronic voting machines.

The video is an interview given by Aras at the Attorney General's Office to journalists from the foreign press on the 11th. In a message released together with the publication, Aras says that “in light of the latest events in the country (…) he remembers the need for distancing, independence and harmony between the Powers”.

The recording comes before Bolsonaro's meeting with diplomats at Palácio da Alvorada. The attorney general does not directly mention the attacks made by the president on that occasion or in other circumstances.

In the publication, Aras says that, in this year's elections, “whoever is elected will be sworn in” and that what happened in the United States during the presidential inauguration, when supporters of former president Donald Trump invaded the Capitol, will not happen again in Brazil.

During the interview, the PGR comments that it has “confidence in the polls and in the Brazilian electoral system”. He states that it is not possible to accept the allegation of fraud, as the electronic voting machine has demonstrated success and fairness over the years.

“Brazil’s polarization is no different from other countries. We, here in Brazil, have not only sought legal measures that punish the guilty, but also promoted programs of social pacification and respect for those who oppose it,” she declared.

Demonstration of attorneys

On Tuesday (19), more than 40 federal prosecutors sent a representation to Aras in which they demand an investigation against Bolsonaro for attacks on the electoral system. Thirty deputy attorneys of the Republic also issued a public note – the position is a main one in the structure of the Federal Public Ministry.

Since taking office, Aras has not filed any complaints against Bolsonaro.

What do the presidents of the House and Senate think

In this story, the silence of the President of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), regarding Bolsonaro's statements draws attention. The attitude is different from that taken by the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (União-MG), who commented that the security of the electoral process can no longer be doubted.
