Scientists launch letter in support of Lula and say that Bolsonaro “feeds ignorance against reason”

A group of 141 Brazilian scientists signed a manifesto in support of the candidacy of former president Lula (PT), classifying the Bolsonaro government as a management that feeds “ignorance against reason”. Among the supporters of the letter - published by the website Congresso em Foco - are the honorary president of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC), Ennio Candotti, and neuroscientist Sidarta Ribeiro.

The manifesto directly criticizes the way in which the current government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) handled the Covid-19 pandemic. In the text, scientists warn of more than 685 thousand victims of the disease in the country who could be alive if the government had faced the problem correctly.

“We support the candidacy of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for president of Brazil in the second round of elections.

Our statement justifies the fact that your government's policy continued and consolidated, from 2003 to 2011, the foundations for fraternal, educated, scientific and technological development in our country. The seeds of equality germinated and fueled arts, culture and international cooperation.

We condemn the current government for fostering ignorance against reason, devastating environments and living together in our land; for attacking common sense in the serious health pandemic; for treating Covid and its victims with contempt, encouraging the use of harmless therapies such as Chloroquine and Ivermectin.

Many of the 686 deaths could have been avoided if the recommendations of scientists and health professionals had prevailed over the flat-earthing of government guidelines.

We support the formation of the broad front of political forces that Lula brought together around his candidacy. The initiative haspromedemocracy and equality and will be important for the implementation of the new government's scientific, technological, environmental, educational, health and cultural policies. A repulsive page in our history will be turned on October 30th, but not forgotten.
