Flávio Dino: discover the trajectory of Lula's Minister of Justice

Born in São Luís do Maranhão, Flávio Dino was chosen by President Lula to head the Ministry of Justice. The lawyer and professor is a member of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and had already held other public positions before Lula's appointment. Who is Flávio Dino?

  • 1991: graduated in Law from the Federal University of Maranhão;
  • 2007 to 2011: was federal deputy for Maranhão;
  • 2011 to 2014: holds the position of president of the Brazilian Tourism Institute (Embratur);
  • 2015 to 2022: was governor of the State of Maranhão;
  • 2022: is elected senator;
  • 2023: takes over as Minister of Justice and Public Security in Lula's third term.

In February 2012, Flavio Dino experienced a personal tragedy. He lost his youngest son, aged 13, to an asthma attack. The civil police of the Federal District even investigated alleged negligence on the part of the hospital where the young man was, but ended up acquitting the doctor and nursing assistant accused of medical error due to “insufficient evidence”. As governor of Maranhão, gained national prominence for opposing the Bolsonaro government and clashing with the Ministry of Health during the health crisis Covid-19.
