Geraldo Alckmin: from opponent to Lula's vice-president and minister of Industry and Commerce

Former tucano Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) went from being Lula's long-time opponent to vice president, coordinator of the transition team and minister of Industry and Commerce. A doctor by training, he once again occupies a prominent place in politics. O Curto tells you more about Alckmin's trajectory.

  • He began his political career as a councilor, then as mayor of his hometown in the 1970s, before being elected deputy in 1986.
  • 1988: co-founded the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB);
  • 2001 to 2006 e 2011 to 2018: governor of São Paulo;
  • 2006: lost to Lula in the second round of the presidential elections;
  • 2018: obtained less than 5% of the votes in the presidential elections;
  • 2022: leaves the PSDB and joins the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB).

To those who consider his alliance with the former PT president unnatural, Geraldo Alckmin assures that the time has come for a sacred union for democracy, threatened, according to him, by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), with an ultra-rightist inclination.

However, in 2017, Alckmin still had many criticisms of the former metalworker: “After having broken Brazil, Lula says he wants to return to power. In other words, he wants to return to the scene of the crime,” he said during a PSDB congress.

Far from being a charismatic speaker, Alckmin received an unflattering nickname: chayote popsicle. “I'm not a 'showman'. They nicknamed me Chayote Popsicle. If you want to see a show, go see the genius of Tom Cavalcante”, he added during the 2018 presidential elections. This year, alongside Lula, he stood out for his good humor: “Lula is a dish that goes well with chayote”, he joked. , inspiring a risotto recipe that became popular on social media.

Married to Lu Alckmin for 40 years, he is the father of three children and suffered the pain of losing his youngest son, Thomaz, in a helicopter accident in 2015.
