Authorities take a stance on terrorist acts in Brasília; Tarcísio repudiates protesters

After terrorist acts by Bolsonarists in Brasília, on the afternoon of this Sunday (8), authorities took to social media to speak out about protests. Tarcísio de Freitas, governor of São Paulo, who supported Jair Bolsonaro in the electoral race, repudiated the acts and said he will not allow demonstrations of this level in the state. Claudio Castro, who also campaigned with Bolsonaro, also spoke out against the demonstrations.

Governors spoke out on social media

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro, who also received support from Jair Bolsonaro for the state government, also took to Twitter to repudiate the acts in Brasília. According to him: “We will be energetic against any and all demonstrations that do not respect heritage”.

Romeu Zema, governor of Minas Gerais, who also signaled support for Bolsonaro during the 2022 electoral race, said that “Freedom of expression cannot be mixed with the depredation of public bodies”.

The National Forum of Governors expresses its absolute disgust at witnessing the very serious and unacceptable episodes recorded today in the Federal District, which reveal the invasion of Praça dos Três Poderes, followed by the illegal vandalization of the premises of the Palácio do Planalto, the National Congress and the Supreme Court. What do the institutions say?

A Brazilian Bar Association, through a note, condemned the extremist acts on Sunday afternoon. According to the OAB statement:

“The Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) considers the invasion of public buildings and the attacks carried out against the Three Powers carried out this Sunday to be unacceptable. In addition to physical depredation, the attacks aim to weaken the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary Powers and the Federal Constitution, which are the pillars of the longest democratic period in Brazilian history.”

The Federal Public Ministry, based on a note, spoke about the measures taken by the body regarding the acts:

“Among the measures taken today, the attorney general requested the Federal District Attorney's Office (PRDF) to immediately open a criminal investigative procedure with a view to holding those involved accountable and placed the Secretariat of Expertise, Research and Analysis (Sppea) of the PGR at the agency’s disposal in order to preserve recordings and posts that could lead to the identification of offenders”

The Civil Police of the Federal District, in its last statement, said it had placed all its personnel on standby to combat criminal acts.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, early this Sunday evening, used his Twitter account to say that “the Judiciary will not be lacking in Brazil”

Minister Rosa Weber, president of the Federal Supreme Court, also took a tough stance on Sunday's acts, and said that the building destroyed by vandals will be rebuilt:

“The STF will act to ensure that the terrorists who participated in these acts are duly tried and exemplarily punished. The historic building will be rebuilt”
