“The Electoral Court will guarantee that the exercise of democracy is carried out in a safe, transparent and reliable manner”, he emphasized.

The meeting with international observers was also attended by the president of the STF, Rosa Weber, the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), the president of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Beto Simonetti, and the vice - Electoral Attorney General, Paulo Gonet Branco. All authorities, who are part of the list of entities monitoring the elections, echoed Moraes and endorsed the security of the polls.

In command of the Supreme Court since the beginning of the month, Minister Rosa Weber reinforced the message conveyed in her inauguration speech and defended that democracy requires “dialogue, tolerance and peaceful coexistence with defenders of antagonistic ideas”. The minister emphasized that in the political-electoral dispute competitors must be treated as “adversaries, not enemies”. In the final stretch of the electoral race, the number of politically motivated murders has increased, such as the Mato Grosso farmer killed by a Bolsonaro supporter after advocating a vote for former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

“Democracy requires observance of the rules of the game. It does not allow the will of the majority, whose legitimacy is not contested, to suppress or stifle the opinion of minority groups, much less restrict their constitutionally guaranteed rights,” said Rosa.

Meeting with Bolsonaro

The Organization of American States (OAS) sent a delegation with 55 observers from 17 nationalities, who are distributed across 15 units of the federation to monitor the elections. Last Monday, the 26th, the team began meeting candidates, members of political parties and institutions.

On Monday, the head of the mission, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, met with the president and candidate for re-election Jair Bolsonaro (PL), at Palácio do Planalto. “We held a very cordial meeting. We are collecting all the testimonies from the different candidates”, said Lezcano, who is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, after the meeting.

“We are starting our Electoral Observation Mission. From now on, we will hold a series of meetings with the candidates”, said Lezcano on Monday. “We invite all candidates to hold meetings. Also with political parties, with government institutions, such as the TSE, among others, with Brazilian society organizations, with local observers.”

Before the meeting with Lezcano, on Monday, Bolsonaro mocked the OAS mission: “I will now be with the head of the observers who come to observe the elections here. I'll ask: 'what are you coming to observe?'”.

Meeting with PT

On Wednesday morning (28), the head of the mission met with the national president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann. After the meeting, Lezcano highlighted the importance of the Brazilian dispute for democracy. “The conversation was very important, knowing the PT’s points of view. We will continue the agendas, meeting with other candidates, considering the importance of this election for democracy, not only in Brazil but for the continent”, he stated.

According to the View Forum Posts, Gleisi presented Lezcano with concerns about the escalation of political violence in Brazil and the spread of fake news by Bolsonarists. The PT candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, did not participate in the meeting and set aside the day to rest and prepare for the debate on Globo, scheduled for this Thursday (29).
