'As a Brazilian and Latin woman, this nomination is very representative', says Anitta on the eve of the Grammys

It has been almost 60 years since the last time a Brazilian artist was nominated for one of the main Grammy categories. Anitta, the "Girl from Rio", hopes to win the prize that her compatriot Astrud Gilberto, the voice that immortalized "Girl from Ipanema", lost.

“I received this nomination with great joy and I am super excited. Imagine, the last time a Brazilian woman was nominated for one of the four main Grammy categories was in 1965!”, said Anitta in an interview with AFP, making reference to João Gilberto's ex-wife.

“As a Brazilian and Latina woman, a nomination like this is very representative and fills me with pride.”

Anitta became a global phenomenon last year with his huge hit “Envolver”. Played more than 100 million times in the weeks following its release, the song set a Spotify record and its challenging choreography shook the TikTok with thousands of videos. “I have already achieved much beyond what I could ever dream of”, she said when reflecting on her journey.

This Sunday (5), Anitta arrives at Grammy with the hope of being named best new artist at the ceremony held in Los Angeles. She will compete with figures such as Omar Apollo, Måneskin and Samara Joy, among other celebrities.
