The fight against global warming should not slow down economic growth, says COP28 host

The fight against global warming must go hand in hand with economic growth, said this Monday (30), the head of the United Arab Emirates oil company, Sultan Ahmed al Jaber, who will preside over the 28th UN climate conference ( COP28).

"We must limit the global rise in temperatures to 1,5°C without slowing economic growth”, declared Al Jaber during a graduation ceremony at the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence.

His appointment as president of the COP28 provoked a wave of criticism from environmental defenders, who considered that his appointment threatened the “legitimacy” of international climate negotiations.

The conference will be held between November and December 2023 in Dubai. The last one, which took place in Egypt in November (COP27), approved a historic loss and damage fund for countries “particularly vulnerable” to climate change.

But some experts criticized the fact that the conference failed to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
