Germany announces more than R$1 billion for environmental actions in Brazil

To start the week with good news, this Monday (30), after meeting with Marina Silva, Germany's Cooperation Minister, Svenja Schulzea, said that her country is ready to "contribute" to protecting the Amazon and plans new financial aid for Brazil.

“These relationships that we have also survived the difficult years we had and now we really want (…) to contribute with our knowledge and we are making resources available”, he said Schulze at a press conference.

Marina Silva e Schulze celebrated the release of 35 million euros (US$38 million) for the Amazon Fund, previously announced by Berlin. These resources will be allocated to environmental preservation projects that have been frozen since 2019.

Like Norway, the Germany had interrupted its cooperation in this fund due to the lack of commitment to the protection of Amazon of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Furthermore, the German minister expressed his government's intention to allocate an additional amount of 31 million euros (US$33,6 million) to Brazilian Amazon states.

The value will be used in “forest protection and sustainable use projects“, in addition to a loan of 80 million euros (US$87 million) with lower rates for farmers to reforest their lands.

“Brazil is the lungs of the world. If there are problems, we all have to help,” he said. Schulze.

Marina Silva added that the Germany is willing to “cooperate” with Brazil, both with the increase “in resources for the Amazon Fund” and with the “opening of markets for sustainable products”.

The minister stated that part of the resources of the Amazon Fund they could be used in “emergency” actions to assist indigenous communities, as in the case of the Yanomami, whose territory the Lula government declared an emergency, due to the increase in cases of malnutrition and diseases caused by the advance of illegal mining.
