The states most affected by the fire in August and the respective burned areas were: Pará (869.462 hectares); Mato Grosso (657.342 hectares); Tocantins (421.997 hectares); Amazonas (303.088 hectares); and Maranhão (246, 325 hectares), all covering the Amazon and Cerrado biomes.

August and september are the months in which the height of the dry season in some regions of the country. Researchers anticipate that next month's numbers could be even higher for the Amazon and Cerrado biomes.

“Although the area burned from January to August in Brazil was smaller than the area burned in 2021 in the same period, unfortunately, we are expecting an even larger area affected by fire in the country for the month of September, again in Amazon and Cerrado. We will confirm this projection in the coming weeks with the Fire Monitor mapping for the month of September”, indicates Vera Laísa Arruda, researcher at IPAM and at Fire Monitor.

From January to August 2022, Brazil had a total burned area of ​​5.924.418 hectares.
