Brazil could lead global production of green hydrogen, study shows

The Brazilian potential in the production of green hydrogen is in the study "Green Hydrogen Opportunity in Brazil" ("Green hydrogen opportunity in Brazil"), released this Friday (20) by the German consultancy Roland Berger. According to the research, if the world fulfills the commitments established in the Paris Agreement - with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimize the impacts of global warming - most of the energy consumed on the planet will come from green hydrogen. This demand will push towards a global market estimated at more than US$1 trillion.

O green hydrogen It is produced without carbon emissions and uses renewable energy (hydro, wind, solar and biomass). It is the only one with sustainable and carbon-free production and is seen as a key element to make the decarbonization of the Earth possible, one of the goals set by countries around the world by 2050.

The Roland Berger study foresees the opportunity for green hydrogen represent direct investments in Brazil of around R$600 billion over the next 25 years.

According to research, reducing the cost of electricity to produce green hydrogen in Brazil it can be achieved through:

  • use of surplus renewable electricity (wind, solar, hydro and biomass), using current surplus renewable production at much lower generation costs;
  • the costs of transmission and distribution of electricity used for the production of green hydrogen should be reduced;
  • government exemptions and sectoral charges applied to the electricity bill must be approved.
