Lula at COP27: “Brazil is back”

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was received at COP27 with applause. Lula emphasized that he was there - even before assuming the presidency of the Republic - "because the world is in a hurry to see Brazil participating in discussions about the future of the planet." The speech took place in the so-called "Blue Zone", of the United Nations (UN), with the presence of Sameh Shoukry, president of COP27 and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt.

“I am here today to say that Brazil is ready to join the efforts to build a healthier planet again. Of a fairer world, capable of welcoming all of its inhabitants with dignity – and not just a privileged minority”, he said Squid already at the beginning of his expected speech at the COP27.

The president-elect addressed his speech inside the country – businesspeople, agribusiness, institutions and society – and outside – international leaders, former commercial partners and environmentalists – focusing on the principle of common responsibility for the future of the planet, but at the same time , differentiated.

Squid spoke of the importance of developed countries allocating resources to loss and damage funds, “so that poorer countries can face problems created by rich countries, but which disproportionately affect the most vulnerable”.

“There is no climate security for the world without a protected Amazon,” he said Squid, announcing that the fight against climate change will have a prominent place in the next government.

“We are going to prioritize the fight against deforestation,” he stated, citing data from the last four years.

“The devastation will be in the past and environmental crimes… will now be fought relentlessly”, added the president-elect. He said his government will recreate the inspection systems that have been destroyed over the past four years.

Squid confirmed the commitment to create the specific ministry for Brazilian indigenous peoples. “We are going to create the Ministry of Original Peoples, so that the indigenous people themselves can present proposals for dignified survival, security, peace and sustainability. The original peoples and those who reside in the Amazon region must be the protagonists of its preservation”.
