Fires in the Amazon spike after 2nd round of elections

The fires exploded uncontrollably in several states in the Amazon between the 1st and 10th of November, the period following the second round of elections, compared to the same period in the last 10 years. This is what a survey released this Friday (11) by WWF found based on data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

The worst case is Rondônia, where 1.526 outbreaks were recorded. burned. The value is around 10 times higher than the average recorded in this period between 2012 and 2021 (149 outbreaks).

O deforestation also continues to rise in Amazon. October data, released by Inpe this Friday (11), shows that the biome had 904 km² devastated last month. With this, the deforestation accumulated between January 01st and October 31st of this year is the highest value in the DETER historical series (since 2015) with the destruction of 9.494 km².

The increase in burned and deforestation coincides with the federal government's order for the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) to reduce inspection spending by 80%.

According to WWF data, since November 1st, areas of the institute have been receiving messages with the order to “cancel all inspection operations that depend on budgetary resources (per diem, tickets, fuel, supplies and others) planned for the first half of November”.

The explosion of fires and deforestation, shortly after the second round of elections, seems to confirm the fears of environmentalists, who predicted an acceleration of environmental crimes in the last two months of the year, given the expectation that the next Lula government will recover the environmental protection system.
