'Life of the planet' is at stake due to climate change, warns Biden at COP27

Supported by his mega plan against climate change, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, arrived in Egypt this Friday (11) to briefly participate in COP27. There is an expectation from participants for North American commitments to help countries more vulnerable to global warming.

Following the leaders' summit held at the beginning of the week, Biden will remain in Sharm el Sheikh for just three hours to hold a bilateral meeting with Abdel Fatah al Sissi, president of Egypt, and give a speech to representatives of almost 200 countries.

The United States is the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world and the largest producer of oil and gas on the planet, the main human activity that causes CO2 and, therefore, the global warming.

Climate change puts “the life of the planet” at risk – warned the American president, Joe Biden, in his speech at COP27.

He told delegates at the climate talks that his commitment to climate is unwavering and that his government is “putting money where its climate responsibility is”.

Biden added that “good climate policy is good economic policy.”

“I stand here as president of the United States of America and say with confidence that the United States of America will meet our emissions goals by 2030.”

“The climate crisis has to do with human security, economic security, environmental security, national security and the life of the planet,” said the president in front of representatives from almost 200 countries gathered in Sharm el-Sheikh.

In the same speech, Biden stated that the war in Ukraine highlights the “urgency” for the world to leave its dependence on fossil fuels behind.

“Russia’s war [in Ukraine] only reinforces the urgency of the need for a transition so that the world abandons dependence on fossil fuels”, highlighted the leader of the world’s largest oil and gas producer.

The American president also apologized for the fact that the USA left the Paris Agreement during Donald Trump's term (the country has already returned to the agreement). “I apologize for leaving the agreement!” he said, to considerable applause.

The United Nations (UN) International Conference on Climate Change – COP27 – began last Sunday (6), in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. COP is the UN's major annual event whose objective is to discuss actions aimed at combating climate change.
