3 DAYS TO AMAZON DAY

Amazon Day is celebrated on September 5th and its main objective is to make people aware of the importance of the largest tropical forest in the world, whose biodiversity is connected to life across the planet and has suffered constant attacks. This date was chosen as a way to honor the creation of the Province of Amazonas (currently the State of Amazonas) by D. Pedro II, in 1850.

🌳 The Amazon, undone

The series of reports from the North American newspaper The Washington Post seeks to reveal how crime, corruption and greed are accelerating the destruction of the world's largest rainforest.

In its most recent chapter (published on the 30th) – A Failure of Execution: Deforesters are plundering the Amazon. Brazil is letting them get away with it – the authors analyze, through data and testimonies, the impunity that affects those who are destroying the Amazon.

According to the report, among the main problems is the lack of personnel to enforce environmental law – “few inspectors for too much deforestation”.

The authors classify the violent and lawless destruction of the Amazon as “perhaps the greatest environmental crime story in the world”.
