London Marathon opens category for non-binary people

The organizers of one of the most prestigious competitions in the world, the London Marathon, announced this Wednesday (14) the opening of a category for non-binary athletes for its next edition, which takes place in April 2023.

From now on, athletes from London Marathon they do not need to choose between the categories “female” and “male”. From the 2023 edition onwards, the category for non-binary gender will also be offered.

What is nonbinary?

According to LGBT Foundation, non-binary people are people who do not define their gender identity within the margins of binary – that is, female or male. Instead, they understand gender in ways that go beyond merely identifying as male or female.

Inclusion effort

According to an announcement from the organization of the sporting event, the measure is part of a “working to make the marathon the most diverse, equitable and inclusive in the world.”*

“We know there are still many changes to be made, but this shows our commitment to making London an event open to everyone,” race director Hugh Brasher said in a statement. Brasher added. that the move “is a significant step forward for the London Marathon as we continue our journey to make our event truly inclusive.” (UOL)

One day earlier, on Tuesday (13), the boston marathon had also announced the creation of a “non-binary” category for athletes wishing to participate in the event.

Public registration to participate in the 2023 London Marathon will open on October 1st. For the first time in 4 years, the race will be held in April, in 2023.
