Report highlights cases of racism in Brazilian football

The date of Black Consciousness, celebrated this Sunday, is marked by the fight against prejudice and in favor of racial equality. This problem, in addition to still being present in different areas of society, is also evident in sport. According to the Observatory of Racial Discrimination in Football, as of October this year, more than 70 cases of racism had been recorded in Brazil.

The problem of racial attacks on players affects other countries and is a cause for concern for FIFA, including at the World Cup. On the eve of the World Cup, the entity, in partnership with FIFPRO, the global football players' union, launched a Social Media Protection Service (SPMS), aiming to combat discrimination during the tournament. All athletes involved will have access to a monitoring and reporting service on social media, so that they are protected from possible attacks and insults on the internet during the games.

“In recent years, FIFA has rightly adopted a hard-line policy towards players in cases of discriminatory conduct and hate speech. I consider it very appropriate to adopt measures that also seek to protect players from discriminatory acts and intolerance committed by fans, especially during an event of the size and scope of a World Cup, where attacks can instantly gain global proportions”, comments the lawyer Eduardo Diamante de Sousa, specialist in sports law.

International

In Brazil, teams have also taken action to combat racism, whether with awareness campaigns or the launch of uniforms that allude to the cause and provoke reflection. O International, for example, received the most important award in Brazilian advertising, this Thursday (17), for the club's launch of the black shirt during Black Consciousness Month, in November 2021. The club was awarded at the Professionals of the Year 2022 event, carried out by Globo.

The shirt features phrases such as “black people in Brazilian football are the brand of Brazil”, “black players won the world”, among others. On the chest, there is a patch showing a Black Power haircut with the phrase “It's the Crown”.

“Inter has always been the people's club and history shows that. We were recognized by the most important award in Brazilian advertising with the case that deals with something remarkable in the history of the Brazilian people, the fight against racism. It is the origin of the people's club present in the future of football”, said president Alessandro Barcellos.

In 2021, Inter also included an anti-discrimination clause in the contracts of athletes and employees, who can be fired if they commit acts of prejudice, whether racial, sexual, social or religious.

“We understand that this is a trend in several organizations, and in football it would be no different. We have demonstrated concern and interest in growing more and more as an institution by bringing projects aimed at inclusion and diversity with great intensity, always in a democratic way involving our consulates and fans in general”, adds Barcellos.
